Florence CeramicsFlorence Ceramics The Florence of Florence Ceramics Company was Florence Ward, who started the company in her Pasadena garage in 1939. After attending a ceramics class in 1942 she turned her hobby into a fulltime business, and by 1946 left the garage for a plant in east Pasadena, upgrading to a large factory in 1949. Florence Ceramics produced some of the finest semi-porcelain figurines in America, the most popular being historical couples...Rhett and Scarlet, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Pinkie and Blue Boy and others.Other Florence items included busts, wall plaques, candle holders, picture frames, and a large assortment of birds. Also popular was the special lace decoration technique Florence developed. The company flourished through the 1950s and a line of bisque animal figures designed by Betty Davenport Ford was added in 1956. After the death of Florence's husband in 1964 the company was sold and production limited to advertising specialties. Production at Florence Ceramics ceased in 1977. |
